Credit Repair After Bankruptcy

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

So here you are, legally bankrupt, no credit, your credit score is in the toilet, you are dead in the water -  you are sunk.  Not so fast.

Before you sink to the depths of despair, listen to me, there is hope. Combine hope  with a little time and effort and you can revive your credit score and get credit to make purchases again.

First get a free credit report from all three bureaus.  See; www.ftc.gov/freereports for more information.  Also see; http://www.uscourts.gov/FederalCourts/Bankruptcy/BankruptcyBasics for additional information.

Read my blogs on credit repair.

Then get to work on cleaning up the reports by notifying the bureaus of incorrect information.  You may be amazed how much this helps.

Let’s talk about:  MEDICAL BILLS, CREDIT CARDS and FUTURE PURCHASES.

MEDICAL BILLS – It is a fact that most Bankruptcies occur because people have incurred insurmountable medical bills.  For accumulating medical bills in the future  try to make payment arrangements with your medical provider that is within your budget.  (More on budgets later.)  How do you determine that figure?   Compare your  income with expenses and make a determination of how much you can pay.  An ongoing payment on a medical expense could be as little as $5.00 per month.  Even if the medical provider rejects the amount that is within your budget, send them the payment anyway.  In order for this approach to be helpful (and this is the important part) you must pay that amount or greater every month.

Will this approach be helpful in every situation?  Sorry to say probably not.  So why bother?  Here is why;    Taking this approach may be helpful to you in several ways:        It may help prevent wages being garnisheed.                      It could help get debt collectors off your back.       It is less likely the provider will sue you for payment.     If the amount is truly within your budget, you are more likely to be able to pay other bills.     There are some types of income that is not collectible making the provider more willing to accept something instead of nothing.

CREDIT CARDS:   Negative thought; ‘I have no credit, so no one will give me credit’.  Why is this statement  negative thinking?  Because it is not necessarily true.

First go to the copies you obtained from the credit bureaus.  Check for credit cards that were not  listed on the Bankruptcy filing.  Credit cards that had a zero balance or payments up to date may still be active accounts in good standing.  If  you find a credit card that fits in this category – 1)  Make sure it has a zero balance.  2) Use it!  Caution is warranted here.  Make extremely small purchases and pay the balance off every month. One suggestion;  use the credit card on a single need/must have item that is  purchased with cash/debit card every month anyway.  One more caution- make sure to stay within your monthly budgeted amount for this item.  An example would be gas budgeted to get to and from work every day.

Nothing usable on the credit reports?  Not a problem.  Apply for a pre-paid credit card.  Pay off the balance every month and within a relatively short period of  time there will be an opportunity to obtain a  more traditional credit card.

If the bankruptcy was the result of irresponsible spending, we are dealing with an added problem.  Never, I say NEVER charge anything on your credit card that cannot be paid off when the bill comes or you will be doomed to end up in bankruptcy again.

FUTURE PURCHASES:  Keep in mind that a credit report is generated based on recent activity.  So if you pay off a derogatory debt wait a couple months before applying to make a major purchase like a home or car.

By all means do not create a situation to increase the activity on the credit report like applying for a store credit card just before making a major purchase.  It will only hurt your chances of being approved for the loan.

If you have questions about a specific situation, by all means ask.  I will do whatever I can to get an answer for you.

I am looking forward to hear your story and what you learned going through the bankruptcy experience.  Who knows your sharing could help someone and that is what it is all about!

CREDIT REPAIR TIP 4

CREDIT REPAIR TIP #4: Be proactive.  Take charge  in cleaning up your credit report.   Do not count on negative automatically disappearing.  Carefully review every detail that appears on the credit report and take steps to address all discrepancies:  Notify all three credit bureaus in writing when:

BANKRUPTCIES:   a bankruptcy does not drop off within the ten year limit.

FORECLOSURE/RELEASE OF LIEN :  the foreclosure/release of lien does not drop off within three years.

OTHER DEROGATORY ACCOUNTS:  If they were part of the  Bankruptcy, make sure they are listed as such.

OPEN ACCOUNTS:  Make sure credit card and other lender accounts do not show up here if they should be closed.  Too many lines of credit drags a credit score down.

A good rule of thumb is no more than one or two active credit cards at any given time.  Resist opening a store account to get the extra 15% off , but if you do,  commit to close it as soon as the bill gets paid.  DO NOT apply for a credit card  if you will not be able to pay off the charges at the first billing.  The interest charges on an unpaid balance will far exceed any benefit received from the initial discount.

Call/write the lender to verify the account is closed.  Many times the credit card company records will show the account closed, but the updated information was not passed on to the bureaus.  If the card is still open request the account closed and ask for verification via e-mail or letter.  Then report to the bureaus that the account s no longer open.

NAMES:  Check to make sure all variations of your name is spelled correctly.

ADDRESSES:  Make sure your ex-spouse’ new address is not listed on your credit report.  Former household members  have tendency to pop as your address.

ACTIVITY:  Check dates on all reported data and ask that the 3 bureaus  remove reference to any activity  ten years or older.

CREDIT REPAIR TIP 1 – 3

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

CREDIT TIP #1: If you have a balance over one half of the credit maximum on an account it can adversely affect your credit score.  For example; If the credit limit on your credit card is $5,000, the balance due needs to below $2500.

CREDIT REPAIR TIP #2:  Carefully review your credit report for ANY discrepancies and report them to all three credit bureaus.  Even an incorrect address can negatively impact your credit score.  The scoring system may see multiple addresses as a red flag to an unstable consumer.   Look for addresses on your credit report that belong to the ex- spouse or a child who moved from home.

CREDIT REPAIR TIP #3: Your credit score will improve if you pay more than the minimum payment on a debt.  How much it improves will depend on the percentage paid over and above the minimum payment, higher percentage = a more improved score.

MOTHERS DAY

Sunday, May 9th, 2010

Mothers Day – What a perfect day to launch the Annie Gets Real blog.  I suspect many mothers are like me, that the best part of celebrating Mothers Day is seeing my boys grown, happy, loving, caring human beings.  I think their secret to success is giving 100% to whatever they are doing at any given moment – can’t go wrong by doing that.  They are very different in personality and stature, but what they have in common is they both have loving  spirits and a jest for life.  When it comes to Mothers Day, I think we have it all wrong.  I want to thank my boys, Mike and Nick , because my life has been so greatly enriched by them and I would not be who I am today if it were not for the privilege of giving birth to my boys.

We rejoice this day in the unquenchable and eternal light that lighteth everyone that cometh into the world.  In that light we are ashamed of those greeds within us that have darkened our own souls, and those selfish customs among us that have shadowed the lives and spirits of others.  We seek Thy presence here, Thou Author of Light, not alone for our joy today, but to illumine the ways of all our doings until every child is brought out of darkness and into Thy marvelous light.  (Author unknown)
